What began innocently enough as an 18-second skit in a busy intersection, has turned into Unexpected Theatrical Interludes that can happen anywhere, at any time.
A Gang of Spacemen are looking to claim territory for their planet; Construction Workers are playing Twister; A slow-motion Butoh game of golf - on the Moon - is being played out before your very eyes; no - you are not crazy! This is Crosswalk Theatre.
Crosswalk Theatre performs brief scenes in a public environment, such as an intersection, the square, or the subway. We try to take something ordinary - people walking around at a slow pace, sight-seeing if you will, and turn it into something extradordinary - the people are aliens. - We do not "force" our performance on anyone; instead we'd rather take our audience by surprise. Make them look twice, and think once, perhaps causing them to see something in a different light. Our goal is to give everyone from joggers to motorists to commuters a jolt from their everyday monotony, and provoke some kind of reaction, be it a laugh, a smile, or a shake of the head!
Crosswalk Theatre, a cocktail of asphalt theatrical marvels, was a huge hit at WinterCity Festival of Arts in Toronto in 2007, Banff Refreshing in 2007, Brilliant City Festival of the Arts in Calgary in 2005, and at the Edmonton International Street Performer's Festival in 2008 & 2004.
"Coming to an intersection near you!"
"Your performances were fantastic and very much enjoyed by our audiences. Thank-you for helping make WinterCity such a success!" - Monika Matel-Sousa, Programming Supervisor, City of Toronto
